Evaluation Of Well-Child Follow-Up in Children with Autism

Öz

Objective: Well-childcare visits play a crucial role in monitoring growth and development and in providing preventive health services, particularly for children with special needs such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study aimed to evaluate the status of well-child follow-up visits and parental attitudes toward vaccination in children diagnosed with autism. Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2024 with the parents of 79 children aged 18 months to 18 years who had been diagnosed with autism and were registered at a special education center. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers based on the literature. The questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics, well-child follow- up practices, and vaccination status. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25.0. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used, and a p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 79 children included in the study, 77.2% (n=61) were male. It was determined that 93.7% (n=74) of the parents regularly attended well-child follow-up visits, with 65.5% (n=52) continuing these visits with their family physician. Regarding routine childhood immunization, 77.2% (n=61) of the families reported vaccinating their children according to the national schedule, whereas 13.9% (n=11) discontinued vaccinations after the autism diagnosis. In addition, 24.1% (n=19) of the parents reported having their children vaccinated with non-routine vaccines, and higher maternal education was associated with a higher likelihood of non-routine vaccination (p < 0.05). Conclusion: A proportion of parents discontinued vaccination after the diagnosis of autism, posing a risk for incomplete immunization. These findings emphasize the need for targeted counseling to support vaccination continuity in children wit
