THE GEOMETRIZING COSMOS, THE CARTESIAN COGITO: THE EPISTEMIC DAWN OF THE MODERN SUBJECT FROM THE PRE-SOCRATICS TO DESCARTES

ABSTRACT
The present study examines how the Scientific Revolution established the modern subject through a genealogical and philosophical perspective. The primary objective of the research is to analyse the dialectical relationship between the 'geometrizing cosmos' and 'Cartesian consciousness' over a conceptual line of transformation extending from the emergence of the subject-object dichotomy in Ancient thought to the institutionalisation of 17th-century Cartesian philosophy. The study employs historical-epistemological analysis to address the genesis of the subject-object duality, tracing this concept from Heraclitus's fragment on self-reflection to Socrates, Plato's political conception of human nature, the epistemic constraints of the medieval theocentric paradigm, the rupture initiated by the Renaissance and Reformation movements, and the macro-social dissolution of the feudal-theological world plan in the 17th century. Within this axis, Montaigne's experiential autonomous subject, Bacon's theory of idols and inductive method, Galileo's mathematical comprehension of nature, and Descartes's foundational subject based on the Cogito are comparatively analysed. Consequently, the epistemic dawn of the modern subject is evaluated as a multi-layered process of rupture wherein social, methodological and metaphysical transformations interweave, finding its constitutive expression in the Cartesian Cogito.
