Evaluation of Apitourism Development in Europe and Türkiye

Abstract

Tourists are looking for new types of tourism to see the distinctive cultural and natural beauties of a region and feel and experience what is different. Apitourism has become popular in recent years as being one of unique type of alternative tourism with its special characteristics. Apitourism is a touristic experience in which tourists can have the opportunity to learn many things about beekeeping, bee types, honey production and honey varieties and life in beehives. The main purpose of this study is to examine apiturism as an innovative tourism type, and to evaluate the apitourism potential and improvements of 15 European countries (Austria, Britain, Bulgaria, Czech, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain) and Türkiye based on statistical data. In this regard, within the scope of the study, firstly, the concept of apiturism, and its main activities were explained, and then evaluations and comparisons were made regarding the apitourism potential and improvements of European countries and Türkiye based on secondary statistical data. In the study, findings regarding apitourism museums/visitor centers in European countries and Turkey were classified. Among the countries examined, it was determined that the countries with the highest number of museums were France, Germany, England and Spain, respectively.
