ASSESSMENT OF PROBLEMS BETWEEN YOUNG INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR PARENTS IN TURKEY ACCORDING TO RESULTS OF “RESEARCH ON FAMILY STRUCTURE 2006” SURVEY
Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to identify problematic issues between young individuals in 18-25 age group and their
parents and to examine variables affecting occurrence of such situations in Turkey.
Method: Micro data of “Research on Family Structure 2006” survey is used in this study. Study population is composed of
2.332 young individuals in 18-25 age group who live together with their parents and 4.274 parents who live together with
their children in 18-25 age group in the same household. Problematic issues with regard to inter-family communication are
examined considering perspective of both young individuals and parents. Also effects of variables; like gender, educational
attainment and personal income on occurrence of problematic issues between parents and their young children are investigated
with a logistic regression model.
Results: Young individuals and their parents are having problems most widely on “expenditure and consumption habits”, “mate
choice” and “fashion style” topics. Young individuals living in high income households, have high level of education and having
unpleasant relationship with her/his father are more likely to experience problems with their parents. On the other hand, having
a personal income is decreasing odds of occurrence of a problematic issue.
Conclusion: Individuals, in the last stage of their young age period, can give independent decisions and make their own
selections. Problems between parents and their young children arise when this situation escape from the attention of parents.
