The Electrical Appliances Accidents Encountered at Home and the Measures Taken
Abstract
The study was planned and carried out in order to
examine the electrical appliances accidents
encountered by the families at home, and to determine
the taking measures in order to be protected from
these accidents. The study was carried out on a total
of 600 person (parents) chosen form the families
living in the region which is connected to Mamak Dr.
Halil Ülgen Health Center by means of random
sampling. The data of the study were gathered as a
result of applying the questionnaire form prepared by
the researchers between 9 and 21 June 2010 with
face to face interview technique. It was detected that
in the home of 39 people (6.5%) participating in the
study, electrical appliances accidents occurred. 64.3%
of 561 people not having electrical appliances
accidents in their homes are taking measures in order
not to have electrical appliances accidents, and the
people stating that they “pay attention to the use of the
appliances” come first among the people taking
measures. 97.5% of the people having an accident is
female, while 2.5% is male. It was detected that more
than half of the people having electrical appliances
accidents (% 68.3) had the accidents in the kitchen.
The mostly incurred parts in the bodies of the people
after the accident are hand and arm (90.3%). It was
found out that the accidents occurred resulted at the
highest ratio (19.5%) from the kettles. It was seen
that burn is at the highest ratio (61.0%) among the
accidents, electric shock took the second place
among the electrical appliances accidents (12.2%).
When the reasons or the accidents resulting from the
electrical appliances, carelessness was stated at the
first place with a ratio of 77.5%. Most of the electrical
appliances accidents prevented with some caution.
