The Structure of the Large Families in Azerbaijan in the XIX-XX Centuries
Abstract
This study researches the structure, development
of the large families in Azerbaijan in the XIX-XX
centuries. The article investigates the historical and
sociological background and reasons for creation of
these families.
The large families had very deep roots till the
beginning of XX century. The connecting factor for
these families was relationship by blood. Such kind of
relationship created a sense of responsibility among
family members towards each other. This
responsibility showed itself in the following issues: to
take care of each other, to share everything benefit
and lost, to cooperate.
This study recognizes patriarchy as a structure for
these families, where the man is the owner of
everything and he is a main decision maker in the
family. In the inheritance questions a son gets the
majority of the family’s heritage and after the father’s
death the oldest son becomes a leader of the family.
The elements that made these families different and
unique such as very specific family traditions, also
mentioned in this study.
This study based on the real-life examples from
the different large families, which lived in Azerbaijan.
In addition the study investigates the large families’
structure in the different regions of Azerbaijan such
as in Nakhchivan, Baku, and the North of Azerbaijan
and so on.
At the end authors mention the reasons of
diminishment and modification of the large families in
Azerbaijan.
