Examination of Dementia Knowledge Levels among Students of Faculty of Health Sciences

Öz

The aim of this study is to examine the level of dementia knowledge among students of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Istanbul Aydin University. The research was conducted using a survey model and 564 undergraduate students from the faculty of health sciences were reached through convenience sampling. Data for the study were collected using the Socio-Demographic Information Form and the Dementia Knowledge Assessment Scale (DKAS). According to the findings, there was no significant difference in dementia knowledge levels based on gender. However, taking courses related to dementia and having individuals diagnosed with dementia in the family or close circle were found to positively influence the level of dementia knowledge. Additionally, the level of dementia knowledge showed statistically significant differences among the departments within the Faculty of Health Sciences. Also, it was determined that dementia knowledge levels differed statistically and significantly based on the educational level (class year) of the participants. In the light of these findings, it should be considered that education is effective in increasing dementia knowledge levels. Accordingly, it is recommended to include courses related to dementia in the curricula of the departments within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

SAĞLIK BİLİMLERİ FAKÜLTESİ ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN DEMANS BİLGİ DÜZEYLERİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı İstanbul Aydın Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi öğrencilerinin demans bilgi düzeylerinin incelenmesidir. Araştırma tarama modeli kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiş olup sağlık bilimleri fakültesinde öğrenim gören 564 lisans öğrencisine kolayda örnekleme yoluyla ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Sosyo-Demografik Bilgi Formu ve Demans Bilgi Değerlendirme Ölçeği (DBDÖ) kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularına göre demans bilgi düzeyi cinsiyete göre anlamlı bir farklılık göstermemiştir. Bununla birlikte demansla ilgili ders alma ile aile veya yakın çevrede demans tanılı bireylerin bulunmasının demans bilgi düzeyini arttırmada etkili olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca demans bilgi düzeyinin sağlık bilimleri fakültesi bölümleri arasında ve katılımcıların eğitim aldıkları sınıf düzeyine göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde farklılık gösterdiği saptanmıştır. Bu bulgular doğrultusunda eğitimin demans bilgi düzeyini arttırmada etkili olduğu göz önünde bulundurularak sağlık bilimleri fakültesinde yer alan bölümlerin eğitim müfredatına demansla ilgili derslerin eklenmesi önerilmektedir.
