Experiences from a Workshop to Improve Teacher Training with the University Robotics STEM Community

Abstract

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize cognitive, social, and physical applications in terms of science and engineering applications. This article presents the findings of a workshop in which an Arduino-supported robotic STEM activity was conducted using engineering and design processes with science and engineering applications. This activity was conducted as a workshop by a robotics STEM club established within the university to develop the design and engineering thinking skills of prospective science teachers through electrical circuits and coding. This workshop provides an opportunity for prospective teachers to develop their design and engineering skills and ability to use robotic STEM activities in their professions. Our aim was to contribute to the existing body of research on STEM education and teacher education by providing insights into the role of Arduino-supported robotic STEM activities in the development of prospective teachers. We discuss prospective teachers' experiences with this activity by describing all stages of an Arduino-supported STEM activity by following the engineering and design processes. We also discuss its usefulness and potential contributions to future research.
