Beyaz Adamın Yükü’nün Yeniden Tanımlanması: George Orwell’in “Bir Fili Vurmak” Denemesi

Öz

Rudyard Kipling, günümüzde önde gelen bir edebiyatçı ve Britanya İmparatorluğu’nun ateşli bir savunucusu olarak hatırlanmaktadır. “Beyaz Adamın Yükü” (1899) adlı şiiri, Britanya sömürge öğretisini en açık edebi ifadelerinden biri olmaya devam etmektedir. Şiir, her ne kadar Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin 1898’de Filipinler’i egemenliği altına almasını desteklemek amacıyla yazılmış olsa da etkisi bu spesifik tarihsel bağlamın ötesine geçer. Eser, fedakârlık, paternalizm ve ırksal hiyerarşi retoriği aracılığıyla sömürgeci fethi meşrulaştırma girişimi olarak işlev görür. Buna karşılık George Orwell, sömürgeciliğin daha karanlık ve absürt gerçeklerini vurgulayarak emperyal propagandaya karşı-anlatı sunan bir anti-emperyalist olarak hatırlanır. “Bir Fili Vurmak” (1936) adlı makalesinde Orwell, emperyal prestiji koruma baskısının sömürgeciyi kendi iradesinden (eylemliliğinden) nasıl yoksun bıraktığını gözler önüne serer. Bu bağlamda bu makale, “Bir Fili Vurmak” başlıklı metnin “beyaz adamın yükü” kavramını yeniden tanımladığını ileri sürmektedir. Buna göre söz konusu yük, artık Kipling’in iddia ettiği gibi uygarlaştırma yönündeki ahlaki bir sorumluluk değil; aksine, performatif otoritenin ezici ağırlığıdır. Makale, ambivalans, yerli bakışı ve tersine mimikri gibi temel kavramlara başvurarak, Kipling’in emperyal retoriği ile Orwell’in tasvir ettiği sömürgeciliğin gerçek bedelleri arasındaki boşluğu kapatmak amacıyla anlatıcının iç çatışmasını incelemektedir.

White Man’s Burden Redefined: George Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant”

Öz

Rudyard Kipling is remembered today as a leading literary figure and a fervent defender of the British Empire. His poem “The White Man’s Burden” (1899) remains one of the most overt expressions of British colonial doctrine. Though written to support the United States’ 1898 annexation of the Philippines, the poem’s influence transcends that specific historical context. It functions as an attempt to legitimize conquest through a rhetoric of sacrifice, paternalism, and racial hierarchy. Conversely, George Orwell is remembered as an anti-imperialist, who provided a counter-narrative to imperial propaganda by highlighting the grimmer, absurd realities of colonialism. In his essay “Shooting an Elephant” (1936), he illustrates how the pressure to maintain imperial prestige robs the colonizer of his agency. Thus, this article contends that “Shooting an Elephant” redefines the white man’s burden. That is, the burden is no longer a moral obligation to civilize, as Kipling proposed, but rather an overwhelming weight of performative authority. By consulting key concepts like ambivalence, the native gaze, and reverse mimicry, the article explores the narrator’s internal conflict to bridge the gap between Kipling’s imperial rhetoric and the actual costs of colonialism depicted by Orwell.
