Hereditary Sin in the Hittites: Are the Sins of the Fathers Inherited by the Children?
Öz
As one of the major political actors of the ancient Near East, the Hittites provide a significant case for understanding the relationship between religion, society, and political authority within a polytheistic belief system. In Hittite thought, the relationship between gods and humans was based on mutual obligation and violations of divine duties were believed to result in collective disasters such as plagues, famine, and military defeat. Divinatory and oracular practices played a central role in identifying the causes of divine wrath and reveal that responsibility for sin could be attributed not only to the present generation but also to ancestors. Within this framework, the notion that “the sin of the father passes to the son” constituted an important interpretive principle in Hittite theology.
This study examines how the concept of hereditary sin was conceptualized in Hittite religious thought, the contexts in which it was considered valid, and the ritual mechanisms through which it was negotiated. Adopting a holistic and comparative approach, the article analyzes prayers, rituals, and oracle texts from both royal and non-royal contexts. The analysis demonstrates that hereditary sin was neither a rigid doctrine nor a marginal idea; rather, it functioned as a flexible explanatory framework used to interpret divine wrath, intergenerational responsibility, and political legitimacy in Hittite religion.
