An Investigation of the Factors Affecting College Students’ Mobile Phone Use for Non-Instructional Purposes in the Class

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extend college
students’ mobile phone use for non-instructional purposes in the class is
explained by their level of nomophobia, the number of social media account,
grade point average and gender. Based on predictive correlational research
method, this study collected data from 423 students at the Faculty of Education
in four public universities of Turkey via a questionnaire. The results of the
standard multiple regression analysis showed that college students` nomophobia
level, the number of social media account, grade point average and gender
significantly explained 17 percent of variance in their mobile phone use for non-instructional
purposes in the class. In addition, the predictors making significant
contribution to college students’ mobile phone use for non-instructional
purposes in the class were the level of nomophobia, gender, the number of
social media account, and grade point average, from large to small
respectively. In the light of these findings, this study proposed some policies
for mobile phone use in the class and offered suggestions for future studies.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Ders Sırasında Öğretim Amacı Dışında Mobil Telefon Kullanımına Etki Eden Faktörlerin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın
amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin ders sırasında öğretim amacı dışında mobil
telefon kullanımının nomofobi düzeyi, kullanılan sosyal medya sayısı, genel not
ortalaması ve cinsiyet değişkenleri tarafından ne düzeyde yordandığını
incelemektir. Yordayıcı korelasyon araştırma yönteminin kullanıldığı bu
çalışmadaki veriler, Türkiye’deki dört devlet üniversitesinin eğitim
fakültesinde öğrenim gören 423 üniversite öğrencisinden anket formu
kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Standart çoklu regresyon analizi sonuçları nomofobi
düzeyi, kullanılan sosyal medya sayısı, genel not ortalaması ve cinsiyet
değişkenlerinin üniversite öğrencilerinin ders sırasında öğretim amacı dışında
mobil telefon kullanma düzeyindeki varyansın %17’sini istatistiksel olarak
anlamlı bir şekilde açıkladığını göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte, üniversite
öğrencilerinin ders sırasında öğretim amacı dışında mobil telefon kullanım
düzeyine katkı yapan yordayıcılar çoktan aza doğru nomofobi düzeyi, cinsiyet,
kullanılan sosyal medya sayısı ve genel not ortalaması şeklindedir. Elde edilen
bulgular ışığında, sınıfta mobil telefon kullanımına ve gelecekteki çalışmalara
yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
