Evaluation of Medical Skills of Medical Faculty Final Year Students Who Received Emergency Medicine Internship

Öz

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the emergency medicine internship on the clinical skills of final-year medical students. A descriptive study was conducted with 152 students who completed the emergency medicine internship at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Medicine during the 2021-2022 academic year. Participants were surveyed using a questionnaire covering demographic information and core medical skills outlined in the National Core Medical Education Program (UÇEP). Data were analyzed using chi-square and logistic regression tests. Findings revealed that 87.5% of students aimed to become specialist physicians and were preparing for the Medical Specialization Exam (TUS). While the internship significantly contributed to clinical skills, 99.3% of students felt competent in performing electrocardiography (ECG), and 82.2% in wound/burn care. However, lower competency levels were observed in critical skills such as intubation (14.5%) and post-trauma limb transportation (32.9%). Students who chose the elective emergency medicine internship demonstrated significantly higher rates of intubation (27.6%) and prescription writing (100%) compared to non-elective peers (p=0.009 and p=0.024, respectively). Additionally, male students were three times more likely to opt for the elective internship than females (p=0.012). In conclusion, the emergency medicine internship plays a vital role in enhancing clinical skills, but improvements in training for critical procedures like intubation and advanced life support are needed. Further research into gender-based differences in internship preferences is recommended.
