THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ECONOMIC CONFIDENCE INDEX AND ECONOMIC GROWTH INDEX: THE CASE OF TURKİYE

Öz

This study investigates the possible relationship between economic confidence index, which measures the future expectations of consumers and producers, and economic growth. Smooth economic functioning in countries depends not only on actual factors but also on the expectations of economic agents about the future. In this study, economic confidence index and economic growth index data, which are regularly calculated by the Turkish Statistical Institute, are used to measure the expectations of consumers and producers. Pearson Correlation Analysis was applied to the data in the study using quarterly data for the period between 2012-2023. According to the findings of the analysis, there is a negative correlation between economic confidence and economic growth in Turkiye. The empirical findings indicate that economic decision makers in the country should take into account the negative correlation between the confidence index and economic growth. In addition, the results play an important role in providing a different perspective to policy makers in their efforts to increase economic confidence.

EKONOMİK GÜVEN ENDEKSİ İLE EKONOMİK BÜYÜME ENDEKSİ ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİ: TÜRKİYE ÖRNEĞİ

Öz

Bu çalışmada; tüketici ve üreticilerin geleceğe yönelik beklenti eğilimlerini ölçen ekonomik güven endeksi ile ekonomik büyüme arasındaki olası ilişki araştırılmıştır. Ülkelerde ekonomik işleyişin düzgün gitmesi sadece gerçekleşen faktörlere değil, ekonomik birimlerin gelecekle ilgili beklentilerine de bağlıdır. Çalışmada tüketici ve üreticilerin beklentilerini ölçmek için Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu tarafından düzenli olarak hesaplanan ekonomik güven endeksi ile ekonomik büyüme endeksi verileri kullanılmıştır. 2012-2023 yılları arası çeyrek dönemlik verilerin kullanıldığı çalışmada verilere Pearson Korelasyon Analizi uygulanmıştır. Analiz sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara göre Türkiye’de ekonomik güven ile ekonomik büyüme arasında negatif korelasyon tespit edilmiştir. Amprik bulgular, ülkede iktisadi karar vericilerin, ekonomik büyümeye yönelik bir kararı verme noktasında, güven endeksiyle aralarında oluşan negatif korelasyonu da göz önünde bulundurmaları gerektiğine işaret etmektedir. Bununla beraber bulunan sonuçlar, ekonomik güveni yükseltmeye yönelik olarak yapılan çalışmalarda, politika yapıcılara farklı bir bakış açısı sunma noktasında önemli bir rol üstlenmektedir.
