Basing Repentance of the Messenger of Allah on the Framework of Surah al-Nasr

Abstract

Istigfar is a person’s request with his heart and tongue to be forgiven for his sin by pleading with and apologizing from Allah. The Word istiğfar, which also contains different meanings in the Qur’an,is mostly used in the sense of forgiveness from sins. On the other hand, there are remarkable verse in the Qur’an stating that the prophets, who were chosen by Allah to convey his orders and advice to the humankind, sought forgiveness, as well. The first prophet whose repetance is mentioned in the Qur’an is Adam (PBUH). Eating the fruit of the tree, even though it was forbidden, drove him to seek forgiveness. Moreover, altough the Qur’an informs that the last prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is forgiven all his past, present and future sins, it includes his repetances, as well. This study hopes to reveal the reasons why Mohammed (PBUH),who is the most perfect man in terms of faith, morality, pray and devotion, is ordered to ask for forgiveness in the 3rd Verse of Chapter Nasr. In addition, to eliminate the fantasy in the hearts of who liken repetance to sin, it is aimed to clarify what asking for forgiveness means for the Messenger of Allah in this Verse within the framework of main sources in the field of exegesis
