FROM ALGORITHMIC MANAGEMENT TO ALGORITHMIC LEADERSHIP: A CITATION ANALYSIS ON THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE FIELD
Öz
The ongoing digital transformation is fundamentally reshaping organizational decision-making mechanisms, job design, and leadership paradigms. Within this context, algorithmic management has emerged as a disruptive force, replacing traditional oversight mechanisms and evolving from a mere operational tool into a strategic entity that redefines leadership practices. This study provides an in-depth exploration of the conceptual trajectory of algorithmic management literature through a comprehensive bibliometric lens, uncovering its theoretical evolution toward a sophisticated leadership perspective. Utilizing the Web of Science (WoS) database, 247 high-impact academic studies were retrieved and subjected to co-citation analysis using VOSviewer software. The findings reveal that the intellectual structure of the field is concentrated within three primary thematic clusters: (1) the psychological and behavioral implications of algorithmic control on employees and human resource management; (2) the strategic governance of platform economies and digital ecosystems; and (3) the analytical foundations of digital innovation and organizational design. The resulting network visualizations demonstrate a clear paradigm shift from surveillance-oriented management to a strategic and interactional leadership framework. This research offers a unique theoretical contribution by repositioning algorithms not as passive socio-technical tools, but as active agency-bearing actors that direct organizational processes and fulfill leadership functions in the digital age.
