Aim: Eating disorders (ED) constitute a group of illnesses characterized by cognitive distortions related to one's weight and appearance. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the treatment options for ED, as it addresses these distortions. CBT can be used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with pharmacotherapy. In recent years, the prevalence of online platforms has significantly increased, and psychotherapeutic methods have found their place in these platforms. This systematic review aims to examine the effectiveness of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (IB-CBT) in the treatment of eating disorders and the reasons for premature treatment discontinuation.
Method: A total of 2169 studies were screened from Google Scholar, Wiley, Web Of Science, Springer Link, Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed databases until December 31, 2023. Five randomized controlled trials investigating IB-CBT in the treatment of eating disorders were included in the review.
Results: The results of the systematic review indicate that IB-CBT is effective and acceptable in the treatment of Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Binge Eating Disorder (BED), and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). The effectiveness of the treatment persists for up to one year post-treatment. However, there was no significant decrease in treatment discontinuation compared to face-to-face CBT.
Conclusion: Despite eating disorders being a heterogeneous mental illness, the limited number of randomized controlled trials and the concentration of studies in only three subcategories suggest the need for further research in this field. Additionally, enriching studies with participants under the age of 18 with eating disorders is recommended.
