The Relationship Between Vitamin D and Gestational Diabetes

Öz

Aim: The aim of this review is to examine the effects of vitamin D levels on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy and evaluate the relationship between these two factors. Additionally, it aims to review the findings from the literature regarding the potential effects of vitamin D deficiency on the development of GDM and identify gaps in the current knowledge in this field.
Methods: This review conducted a literature search to explore the relationship between vitamin D and GDM. The results of studies evaluating the effects of vitamin D levels on the development of GDM during pregnancy were examined, with consideration given to various scientific databases and clinical studies.
Results: Studies have shown that pregnant women with low vitamin D levels have a higher risk of developing GDM. Vitamin D deficiency, particularly in the first trimester, has emerged as a significant risk factor for the development of GDM. Furthermore, it is suggested that vitamin D deficiency may increase insulin resistance and thereby lead to disturbances in glucose metabolism, potentially triggering the onset of GDM. However, some studies have not conclusively demonstrated the relationship between vitamin D and GDM. This inconsistency in the literature highlights the need for further research.
Conclusion: Some studies provide strong evidence linking vitamin D levels to the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy, while other research fails to establish a clear relationship in this area. It appears that vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy may increase the risk of GDM, but further research is needed. Therefore, monitoring vitamin D levels in pregnant women could be an important step in preventing GDM. However, more comprehensive and long-term clinical studies are required to better understand the relationship between vitamin D and GDM.

D Vitamini ve Gestasyonel Diyabet Arasındaki İlişki

Öz

Amaç: Bu derlemenin amacı, gebelikte D vitamini düzeylerinin gestasyonel diyabet mellitus (GDM) üzerindeki etkilerini incelemek ve bu iki faktör arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmektir. Ayrıca, D vitamini eksikliğinin GDM gelişimi üzerindeki potansiyel etkilerini araştıran literatürden elde edilen bulguları gözden geçirmek ve bu alandaki mevcut bilgi eksikliklerini belirlemek amaçlanmaktadır.
Yöntem: Bu derlemede, D vitamini ile GDM arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyen literatür taraması yapılmıştır. D vitamini düzeylerinin gebelikte GDM gelişimi üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendiren araştırmaların sonuçları incelenmiştir.
Bulgular: Yapılan araştırmalar, D vitamini düzeyleri düşük olan gebelerde GDM gelişme riskinin daha yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Özellikle ilk trimesterde D vitamini eksikliği, GDM gelişiminde belirgin bir risk faktörü olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bunun yanı sıra, D vitamini eksikliğinin insülin direncini artırabileceği ve dolayısıyla glukoz metabolizmasında bozulmalara yol açarak GDM' yi tetikleyebileceği öne sürülmektedir. Ancak bazı çalışmalarda D vitamini ile GDM arasındaki ilişki net olarak kanıtlanamamıştır. Bu durum, literatürdeki çelişkili sonuçlar ve daha fazla araştırma ihtiyacını ortaya koymaktadır.
Sonuç: D vitamini düzeylerinin gebelikte GDM gelişimi ile ilişkili olduğu konusunda bazı çalışmalar güçlü bulgular sunarken, bu alandaki diğer araştırmalar net bir ilişkiyi ortaya koyamamaktadır. Gebelikte D vitamini eksikliğinin GDM riskini artırabileceği ancak daha fazla araştırmaya ihtiyaç duyulduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Bu nedenle, gebelerde D vitamini düzeylerinin izlenmesi GDM'nin önlenmesinde önemli bir adım olabilir. Ancak, D vitamini ile GDM arasındaki ilişkiyi daha iyi anlayabilmek için daha kapsamlı ve uzun vadeli klinik çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
