From H1N1 to Coronavirus: What can we learn from historical epidemiology while struggling with COVID-19?

Modern scientific medicine has made great progress in the last two hundred years. In this period, the global medical establishment has frequently faced pandemics, often succeeding in giving a fast and organized response. When the current COVID-19 pandemic and the destructive 1918 Spanish Influenza are compared, there are lessons to be learned. In other words, it is vital to benefit from historical epidemiology while coping with new pandemics. The detection of pathogens in both pandemics prove a great success story in terms of demonstrating the progress of modern medicine. The medical reaction against COVID-19 was faster and more efficient compared to the Spanish Influenza which wrought havoc on the world a hundred years ago. Besides, the fact that both pandemics appeared in the form of waves remind us of a striking historical fact: pandemics do not disappear like a flash in the pan and some countries like Italy are more prone to pandemics. In this study, the Spanish Influenza and COVID-19 pandemics are comparatively examined.

H1N1’den Coronavirüs’e: COVID-19 ile mücadele ederken tarihsel epidemiyolojiden neler öğrenebiliriz?

Son 200 yılda muazzam bir ilerleme gösteren modern bilimsel tıp sıklıkla pandemiler ile karşı karşıya kalmış olsa da önemli ölçüde hızlı bir reaksiyon göstermeyi başarmıştır. Geçmişteki salgınlardan yola çıkarak günümüzdeki COVID-19 hastalığı ve 1918'deki yıkıcı İspanyol Gribi pandemisi ile mukayese edildiğinde çıkarılacak dersler bulunmaktadır. Başka bir deyişle, coronavirüs ile mücadele ederken tarihsel epidemiyolojinin verilerinden yararlanmak elzemdir. Her iki salgında patojenin tespit edilmesi modern tıbbın geldiği noktayı göstermesi bakımından büyük bir başarı öyküsünü ortaya koymaktadır. Çin’de patlak veren COVID-19 salgınına yönelik olarak gösterilen tıbbi reaksiyon takriben 100 yıl önce dünyayı kasıp kavuran İspanyol gribindekine nazaran daha hızlı ve etkili olmuştur. Öte yandan, her iki salgının dalgalar şeklinde gerçekleşmesi dikkat çekici bir tarihsel gerçeği bizlere tekrar hatırlatmıştır: pandemileri saman alevi gibi parlayıp hemen sönmediğini ve İtalya gibi bazı ülkelerin pandemilerden zarar görmeye daha yatkın olduğu. Bu çalışmada İspanyol Gribi ve COVID-19 pandemileri mukayeseli olarak ele alınacaktır.
