Investigation of the Bio-Herbicidal Potential of Essential Oils from Origanum onites L., Origanum majorana L., and their Hybrid (O. onites × O. majorana) on the Germination of Some Weed Seeds
Öz
The extensive use of synthetic herbicides drives the need for eco-friendly alternatives. This study evaluated the bio-herbicidal potential of essential oils (EOs) from Origanum onites (ORION), O. majorana (ORIMA), a 50% mixture, and an interspecific hybrid (O. onites × O. majorana, MELEZ). Six doses (0.5-16 µl/petri) were tested against ten weed species (Amaranthus albus L., A. hybridus L., A. retroflexus L., Avena sterilis L., Echinochloa colonum (L.) Link, Hirchfeldia incana (L.) Lagr.-Foss., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Portulaca oleracea L., Setaria verticillata (L.) P. Beauv., and Sinapis arvensis L.) (under laboratory conditions. All EOs showed dose-dependent inhibition of seed germination, with complete suppression (100%) typically at 8 and 16 µl/petri. Amaranthus albus, Portulaca oleracea, and Sinapis arvensis were most sensitive, while Avena sterilis, Hirchfeldia incana, and Echinochloa colonum were more tolerant. Probit analysis revealed variable LD₅₀ and LD₉₀ values; for example, the mixture had an LD₅₀ of 0.012 µl/petri against A. albus, and O. majorana EO was highly effective against Lolium multiflorum and S. arvensis (LD₅₀ 0.002 µl/petri each). The results demonstrate strong bio-herbicidal potential, particularly for the interspecific hybrid evaluated here for the first time. These natural products are promising candidates for sustainable weed management in organic agriculture.
