Assessment of Injury Incidents Among Healthcare Workers: A Five-Year Experience from a University Hospital

Öz

The study aimed to examine sharps injuries (SI) among healthcare workers in a university hospital. The study retrospectively examined blood and body fluid exposures and sharps injuries among hospital staff between 2017 and 2021. Of 674 reports, 627 were analyzed, and data were collected using the “Risky Exposure/Injury Reporting Form” and records. A total of 627 injuries were identified. The most affected group was health sciences students (41.6%). Needlestick injuries accounted for 84.7%, and 80.3% of the instruments were contaminated. Among the injured, 89% were vaccinated against Hepatitis B, 75.9% used gloves, and 85.5% performed wound care. In study, sharps injuries in our hospital were found to occur at a lower rate compared to the literature. Sharps injuries were examined in our hospital. Students and nurses were the most affected, and injuries were found to occur mostly in the emergency department and operating room.
