Digital Transformation in Sports Education: Attitudes of Sports Science Students Towards Augmented Reality Applications

Öz

The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes of students studying in faculties of sport sciences towards the use of augmented reality (AR). A total of 683 students from the Faculties of Sport Sciences at universities located in four different provinces (Zonguldak, Ankara, Manisa, Kırıkkale) participated in the study. The research employed a survey design. To determine students' attitudes towards augmented reality applications, the “Augmented Reality Applications Attitude Scale (ARAAS)” developed by Küçük et al. (2014) was used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS for Windows 25.0 software package. Frequencies, percentages, arithmetic means, standard deviations, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used in the analysis of the data. The significance level was set at .05. Correlation results revealed a strong and positive relationship between satisfaction and desire to use (r = .652, p < .01); and a weak to moderate negative relationship between satisfaction and anxiety (r = -.219, p < .01). It was also found that as anxiety increased, the desire to use AR decreased (r = -.177, p < .01). Overall attitude was positively correlated with satisfaction (r = .780) and desire (r = .626), and moderately positively correlated with anxiety (r = .413). In conclusion, sport sciences students generally perceive AR technology positively, with high levels of satisfaction and moderate to low levels of anxiety. Female students reported higher satisfaction levels compared to males, and institutional practices were found to significantly influence attitudes across universities. Similar attitudes among different departments suggest that AR has applicability across all sport sciences disciplines, while the lack of differences by academic year implies that digital competencies may become homogeneous from the early stages of education.
