Growing Skull Fracture: A Case Operated After Eight Years

Abstract

Aim: Growing skull fracture is a rare complication of head trauma, seen in 0.05-1,6 % of the skull fracturec. In this paper, a patient operated 8 years after the initial trauma has been presented. Case: A 10-year-old male patient presented with a bone defect of the skull. Medical history revealed that, he had fallen from a tree when he was two. Neurological examination was normal. X-ray graphy of the skull demonstrated an oblique right temporoparietal bone defect, extending for about 15 cm and 3 cm at the widest part. The patient was operated to perform duraplasty and cranioplasty. Conclusion: All the linear skull fractures of the childhood should be followed up to make sure that it has been closed. In case of development of a growing skull fracture, surgical treatment should be performed. Key words: Head trauma, Growing skull fracture, Leptomeningeal cyst.

Büyüyen Kafatası Kırığı: Sekiz Yıl Sonra Ameliyat Edilen Bir Olgu

Öz

Amaç: Büyüyen kafatası kırıkları, tüm kafatası kırıklarının sadece %0,05–1,6'sında görülen nadir bir komplikasyondur. Bu çalışmada, kafatası kırığının oluşmasından sekiz yıl sonra ameliyat edilen bir vaka sunulmaktadır. Olgu: On yaşında erkek hasta kliniğimize, kafasını ellediğinde eline gelen “kemik boşluk” nedeniyle başvurdu. Özgeçmişinden hastanın 2 yaşındayken ağaçtan düştüğü öğrenildi. Hastanın nörolojik muayenesinde herhangi bir patoloji saptanmadı. Direkt grafisinde, sağ temporoparyetal bölgede, en geniş olduğu yerde 3 cm olan, yaklaşık 15 cm uzunluğunda, oblik bir kemik defekt görüldü. Hasta ameliyata alınarak duraplasti ve kranyoplasti yapıldı. Sonuç: Çocuklarda görülen tüm kafatası kırıklarında, kırığın kapandığından emin olunmalı ve eğer büyüyen bir kafatası kırığı tespit edilirse, en kısa zamanda tedavi edilmelidir.
