Serum nitric oxide level in rheumatoid arthritis and its correlation with activity of disease

Abstract

Objectives: This study has been conducted to compare serum nitric oxide (nitrite and nitrate) levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and healthy volunteers and also to explore the correlation between these levels and the disease activity parameters. Materials and methods: In this study we included 35 patients with RA who admitted to outpatient clinics of the department of PM&R and met 1987-ARA-Diagnostic Criteria according to clinical and laboratory findings. We included 30 healthy individuals as control group who were matched with patient group according to age and sex. We compared serum nitric oxide (NO) levels of patient with RA and control group and we divided patient's group into two groups according to serum ESR and CRP values as active and inactive to determine the correlation between serum NO (nitrite and nitrate) levels and disease activity.significantly higher in RA patients than the control group (p<0.01). In addition, there was statistically significant correlation between serum NO levels and disease activity parameters (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to these findings serum NO levels were found to be elevated in RA patients and this test can be used as a diagnostic investigation for determining disease activity in these patients. ROMATOİD ARTRİTLİ OLGULARDA SERUM NİTRİK OKSİT DÜZEYLERİ VE HASTALIK AKTİVİTESİ İLE OLAN İLİŞKİSİ+

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışma, inflamatuvar romatizma/ hastalıklardan olan romatoid artrit (RA)'te serum nitrik oksit (nitrit ve nitrat) düzeylerinin hastalık aktivitesi He olan ilişkilerinin saptanabilmesi amacı ile planlandı. Materyal ve Metot: İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Turgut Özal Tıp Merkezi Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon Anabilim Dalı polikliniklerine başvuran, klinik ve laboratuvar tam yöntemleri ile "1987 ARA" kriterlerine göre RA tanısı konmuş 35 olgudan oluşan hasta grubu ile, yaş ve cinsiyetleri hasta grubu ile uyumlu olan 30 sağlıklı bireyin oluşturduğu kontrol grubu çalışmaya alındı. Hasta grubu ile kontrol grubunun serum nitrik oksit (NO) düzeylerinin karşılaştırılması yanısıra, hasta grubu serum ESR ve CRP değerlerine göre aktif ve inaktif olarak iki gruba ayrılarak serum NO (nitrit ve nitrat) düzeyleri ile hastalık aktivitesi arasındaki ilişki de araştırıldı. Bulgular: RA'li hasta grubunda serum NO düzeyleri kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı oranda yüksek saptandı (p <0.001). Yanısıra NO düzeylerinin hastalık aktivitesi parametreleri ile anlamlı derecede ilişki gösterdiği tespit edildi (p<0.05). Sonuç: Elde edilen veriler; RA'li olgularda serum NO düzeylerinin arttığı ve hastalık aktivitesinin saptanmasında kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir.
