AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RELATIVE PRICE VOLATILITY AND INFLATION IN TURKEY WITH RESPECT TO MAIN EXPENDITURE CATEGORIES

The aim of this study is to analyze the hypothesized positive relationship between
relativeprice volatility and the rate of inflation with respect to the following 10 main
expenditurecategories in Turkey: 1) Food, Beverages, and Tobacco, 2) Clothing and Footwear, 3)
Housing,4) Furniture and Household articles, 5) Health, 6) Transportation, 7) Entertainment and
Culture,8) Education, 9) Restaurants, Cafeterias, and Hotels, 10) Other Goods and Services.
We first calculate the measures of relative price volatility for each of the above expenditure
categories by taking the general consumer price index for Turkey as the basis and using the respective
price indices from the seven geographic regions. Next, we examine the relationship between the thus
constructed relative price volatility data and the rate of inflation for each of the 10 main expenditure
categories. We estimate the economic model constructed for this purpose by the ordinary least squares
(OLS) method and test and interpret the estimated parameters for their economic and statistical
significance. The results show that higher inflation rates lead to higher relative price volatility in most of
the expenditure categories. Thus, we provide evidence in favour of the volatility hypothesis in Turkey.

TÜRKİYE’DE HARCAMA GRUPLARINA GÖRE NİSPİ FİYAT DEĞİŞKENLİĞİ VE ENFLASYON İLİŞKİSİNİN EKONOMETRİK ANALİZİ
Öz
Bu çalışmanın amacı, nispi fiyat değişkenliği ve enflasyon oranı arasındaki pozitif ilişkiyi, 10
ana harcama grubu için ayrı ayrı test etmektir. Ana harcama gruplarından her bir harcama grubunun
enflasyonla olan ilişkisi, Türkiye geneli tüketici fiyat endeksleri baz alınarak nispi değişkenlik ölçütleri
belirlenmiş ve enflasyon oranı ile nispi fiyat değişkenliği arasındaki ilişkinin derecesini belirlemek
amacıyla oluşturulan iktisadi model En küçük Kareler yöntemiyle (EKK) analiz edilerek, tahmin edilen
parametreler teste tabi tutulup , sonuçlar yorumlanmıştır.
İktisadi modele dahil edilen 10 ayrı ana harcama grubunun nispi fiyat değişkenliği ölçütü 7
bölgenin o harcama grubuna ait tüketici fiyat endekslerinden oluşturulmuştur. Modelde dikkate alınan
ana harcama grupları 1) Gıda, İçki, Tütün , 2) Giyim Ve Ayakkabı Harcamaları ,3) Konut Harcamaları, 4)
Ev Eşyası, 5) Sağlık Harcamaları, 6) Ulaştırma,7)Eğlence Ve Kültür Harcamaları, 8) Eğitim Harcamaları,
9) Lokanta, Pastahane Ve Otel Harcamaları,10) Çeşitli Mal Ve Hizmetler gruplarıdır. Elde edilen
sonuçlar enflasyon oranının ana harcama gruplarının çoğunda nispi fiyat değişkenliğini artırdığı
görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak değişkenlik hipotezinin Türkiye için geçerli olduğu ispatlanmıştır.
