The correlation between computed tomography findings of the paranasal sinuses and the symptoms of acute sinusitis

Öz

Objectives: We investigated the relationship between symptoms, coronal paranasal computed tomography CT findings and anatomic variations in patients with acute sinusitis.Patients and Methods: The study included 44patients 23 females, 21 males; mean age 35 years; range 21 to 74 years whose diagnosis was acute sinusitis by history and physical examination. A com- prehensive inquiry into the symptoms was made and coronal paranasal CT seans were obtained in ali the patients. Correlations were sought between symptom scores, CT scores, and anatomic variations.Results: No correlations were found between anatomic variations and CT scores. Total symptom scores did not correlate with CT scores. A statisti- cally significant correlation existed only between headache and CT scores. The most commonly affected sinuses were maxillary sinuses 73% , fol- lowed by posterior ethmoidal sinuses 60% .Conclusions: Our data suggest that routine CT evaluations are superfluous in acute sinusitis.

Akut sinüzitte paranazal sinüs bilgisayarlı tomografi bulguları ile semptomlar arasındaki ilişki

Öz

A maç: Akut sinüzitli hastalarda karflılaflılan semp- tomların, koronal paranazal bilgisayarlı tomografi BT bulguları ve belirlenen anatomik varyasyonlarla iliflki- si arafltırıldı. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Sinüzit flikayetleri ile baflvu- ran ve muayene bulguları ile akut sinüzit tanısı konan 44 hasta incelendi. Tüm hastalarda semptomlar ayrıntılı bir flekilde sorgulandı ve koronal paranazal BT ince- lemesi yapıldı. Elde edilen semptom skorları, BT skorları ve anatomik varyasyonlar arasında korelas- yon olup olmadığı arafltırıldı. Bulgular: Anatomik varyasyonlar ile BT skorları ara- sındaki korelasyon yoktu. Toplam BT skorları ile semptom skorları arasında anlamlı iliflkiye rastlan- madı. Sinüzit semptomu olarak sadece bafl ağrısı ile BT skoru arasında anlamlı iliflki saptandı. En sık tu- tulumun maksiller sinüslerde %73 olduğu, bunu posterior etmoid sinüslerin %63 izlediği görüldü. Sonuç: Akut sinüzitli olgularda rutin BT incelemesi- nin gerekli olmadığı sonucuna varıldı
