ECOLOGY AND ECOPHOBIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE
Öz
This article examines the concept of ecophobia within the literature on environment, ecology, fear, and phobia, and discusses its position within the discipline of social work. The study begins by defining the concepts of environment, environmental problems, ecology, and phobia. Then it evaluates the definition of ecophobia, various approaches to its emergence, and the emotional reactions observed in individuals. Drawing on existing literature, the article outlines that ecophobia may develop from early childhood, that negative environmental narratives can influence this process, and that such narratives may weaken the relationship between individuals and nature. Within the framework of the ecological social work approach, this article discusses the social work profession's responsibility to strengthen the human–environment relationship, address the psychosocial effects of environmental problems, and develop multi-level interventions. Environmental concerns, ecological traumas, and the importance of early contact with nature for children are also addressed. Accordingly, the article presents recommendations for ecological education and supportive practices to help individuals cope with ecophobia and establish a healthy connection with the environment.
