Comparative Meat Yield Analysis of Three Commercial Deep-Water Shrimps in the Eastern Aegean Sea
Abstract
This study determines the meat yield (MY) efficiency of three commercially important deep-water shrimp species (Parapenaeus longirostris, Plesionika martia, and Plesionika heterocarpus) caught in the Eastern Aegean Sea (Sığacık Bay, Türkiye). A total of 1103 individuals were sampled monthly between May 2008 and April 2009. After excluding damaged and juvenile specimens, 1092 individuals were analyzed. Meat yield was calculated as the percentage of edible tail muscle weight relative to total body weight. The results showed significant interspecific differences: P. longirostris exhibited the highest mean meat yield (44.91% ± 0.28), followed by P. martia (42.20% ± 0.35), while P. heterocarpus had the lowest yield (33.99% ± 0.41). Seasonally, yield values were generally higher during the winter and spring months. These findings provide essential data for the seafood processing industry and fisheries management in the region, suggesting that P. longirostris and P. martia offer higher processing efficiency compared to P. heterocarpus. Although the dataset predates recent environmental changes in the Eastern Aegean Sea, the results provide a robust baseline reference for long-term comparisons and bio-economic assessments of deep-water shrimp fisheries.
