A Research on Police Officers Graduated from Higher Education Institutions Providing Sports Education: Is The Police Profession A Choice or A Necessity

Öz

In this study, the selection processes of individuals who graduated from higher education institutions providing sports education and the reasons behind these decisions are discussed in detail. The main purpose of the study is to understand whether these individuals choose the police profession voluntarily or as a necessity due to economic or social pressures. In addition, this study examines the effect of having a sports education background on practices and performance in the police profession. In this context, the functionality and contributions of the sports phenomenon in the profession are among the important issues evaluated in this study. The research group consists of 16 active police officers who were determined by criterion sampling method within the scope of purposive sampling methods, which is one of the non-probability sampling strategies. The research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. The collected data were evaluated using content analysis method. According to the results of the research, factors such as economic concerns and family difficulties as well as spiritual factors such as the sanctity of the profession and love for homeland were effective in the preference of individuals with sports education for the police profession. The police profession is seen by the participants as a profession that brings prestige in the society and this situation shapes their professional preferences. Police officers with a sports background can be more successful than their colleagues thanks to their skills such as physical endurance and coping with stress. Again, according to the research results, while the benefits of sports such as personal development, teamwork and self-confidence increase professional success, difficulties such as time management and busy working hours are among some disadvantages.

Spor Eğitimi Veren Yükseköğretim Kurumlarından Mezun Polis Memurlarına Yönelik Bir Araştırma: Polislik Mesleği Tercih Mi Zorunluluk Mu?

Öz

Bu çalışmada, spor eğitimi veren yükseköğretim kurumlarından mezun bireylerin polislik mesleğini seçme süreçleri ve bu kararların arkasında yatan sebepler ayrıntılı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Araştırmanın temel amacı, bu bireylerin polislik mesleğini isteyerek mi yoksa ekonomik ya da sosyal baskılar nedeniyle bir zorunluluk olarak mı tercih ettiklerini anlamaktır. Ayrıca bu çalışmada, spor eğitimi geçmişine sahip olmanın polislik mesleğindeki uygulamalara ve performansa etkisi incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmada, spor olgusunun meslekteki işlevselliği ve katkıları da çalışmada değerlendirilen önemli konular arasında yer almaktadır. Araştırma grubunu, olasılıksız örnekleme stratejilerinden biri olan amaçlı örnekleme yöntemleri kapsamında, ölçüt örnekleme yöntemiyle belirlenen ve aktif olarak görev yapan 16 polis memuru oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma verileri, araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Toplanan veriler, içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre spor eğitimi almış bireylerin polislik mesleğini tercih etmelerinde ekonomik kaygılar ve ailevi zorluklar gibi faktörlerin yanı sıra mesleğin kutsallığı ve vatan sevgisi gibi manevi unsurlar da etkili olmuştur. Polislik mesleği, katılımcılar tarafından toplumda saygınlık kazandıran bir meslek olarak görülmekte ve bu durum da onların mesleki tercihlerini şekillendirmektedir. Spor geçmişine sahip polis memurları fiziksel dayanıklılık ve stresle başa çıkma gibi becerileri sayesinde diğer meslektaşlarına göre daha başarılı olabilmektedir. Yine araştırma sonuçlarına göre sporun kişisel gelişim, takım çalışması ve öz güven gibi faydaları da mesleki başarıyı artırırken, zaman yönetimi ve yoğun çalışma saatleri gibi zorluklar da bazı dezavantajlar arasında yer almaktadır.
