Technical-Tactical Differences Between Olympic and University-Level Badminton: Evidence from Paris 2024 and Rhine-Ruhr 2025

This study investigated performance differences between absolute elite and university-level badminton by comparing selected temporal and technical-tactical indicators from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 World University Games. Employing a retrospective observational design, official results for 195 Olympic matches and corresponding university-level categories were analyzed. Temporal indicators focused on match duration, while technical efficiency was assessed through Winner Points (WP) and Unforced Errors (UE). Statistical evaluations included Mann–Whitney U tests for between-level comparisons and binary logistic regression to identify predictors of set success. Results demonstrated that Olympic matches were consistently longer across all event categories (p < .05) with large effect sizes (d ≥ 0.80). The most substantial difference was observed in men’s singles (41.92 ± 14.14 vs. 22.00 ± 5.30 min). Furthermore, regression analysis indicated that WP (OR = 1.27) and UE (OR = 0.73) were significant predictors of set success at the Olympic level, achieving a 75.8% classification accuracy. These findings suggest that elite-level badminton involves significantly greater temporal demands and that technical precision remains critical for success. The study provides essential performance benchmarks for the transition from university-level to absolute elite competition, highlighting the necessity for enhanced physiological conditioning and effective error management.

Olimpiyat ve Üniversite Düzeyi Badminton Arasındaki Teknik-Taktik Farklılıklar: Paris 2024 ve Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Verilerine Dayalı Kanıtlar

Öz

Bu çalışma, elit ve üniversite düzeyindeki badminton performansını Paris 2024 Olimpiyat Oyunları ve Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Dünya Üniversite Oyunları verileri üzerinden karşılaştırarak teknik-taktik ve zamansal farklılıkları incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada geriye dönük gözlemsel bir tasarım kullanılmış; veriler organizasyonların resmi sonuç kitapçıklarından elde edilmiştir. Toplamda 195 Olimpiyat maçı analiz edilmiş ve beş resmi kategori (tek erkekler, tek kadınlar, çift erkekler, çift kadınlar ve karışık çiftler) bazında karşılaştırmalar yapılmıştır. Zamansal gösterge olarak maç süresi; teknik verimlilik göstergeleri olarak ise kazanılan sayılar ve basit hatalar kullanılmıştır. İstatistiksel analizlerde Mann–Whitney U testi ve ikili lojistik regresyon uygulanmıştır. Bulgular, Olimpiyat maçlarının tüm kategorilerde üniversite düzeyine göre anlamlı derecede daha uzun olduğunu (p < .05) ve büyük etki değerlerine (d ≥ 0.80) sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. En belirgin fark tek erkekler kategorisinde (41,92 ± 14,14 dakikaya karşın 22,00 ± 5,30 dakika) tespit edilmiştir. Lojistik regresyon analizi sonucunda, kazanılan sayıların set başarısını pozitif yönde (OR = 1,27), basit hataların ise negatif yönde (OR = 0,73) anlamlı şekilde yordadığı saptanmıştır; modelin genel sınıflandırma doğruluğu %75,8 olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, Olimpiyat düzeyinde badmintonun çok daha yüksek zamansal talepler içerdiği ve teknik verimliliğin elit performansta temel belirleyici olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Bu veriler, üniversite seviyesinden mutlak elit seviyeye geçiş yapacak sporcular için somut performans referansları sunmakta ve antrenörlerin uzun süreli performans ile hata yönetimi odaklı stratejiler geliştirmesine bilimsel bir zemin hazırlamaktadır.
