Eser; kronoloji (s.vıı-vııı), önsöz (s.ıx), 6 harita (s.x-xvı), giriş (s. 1-18), Ülke ve İnsanlar (veya Toprak ve Yerleşenleri) (s.19-49), Millet Öncesi (s.50-85), Doğu Sorunu (s.86-115), Ulus Devletlerin Kuruluşu (s.116-142) adlı 4 bölüm, Şiddet Üzerine başlıklı bir sonuç kısmı (s.143- 151), Balkanlar için daha fazla okuma kitapları (s.152-153), notlar (s.154-169) ve indeksten (s.170-176) oluşmaktadır. Eserin adından da anlaşılacağı gibi çok iddialı bir çalışmadır. Aldığı ödüller ve özellikle Batı okurundan aldığı övgülere bakıldığında, iddia gerçeğe dönüşmüş gibidir. Eserin ilk baskısı 2000 yılında yapılmış olup aynı yıl Wolfson Tarih, ertesi yıl ise Bentinck Ödülü'nü almıştır.
