Öz

Peçenekler, tarih sahnesine çıktıkları IX. yüzyıl başlarından, hâlâ varlıklarının hissedildiği XII. yüzyıl başlarına kadar Doğu Avrupa tarihinde etkin bir rol oynamış önemli bir Türk topluluğudur. Siyasi tarihleri tek bir coğrafyada ve güçlü bir monarşik idare altında geçmemiş olmasına rağmen ikamet ettikleri bölgelerde ve temasta bulundukları topluluk ve devletlerin tarihlerinde kalıcı izler bırakmışlardır. Bu nedenle içinde Peçenekler ile ilgili bir bölüm barındırmayan hiçbir bilimsel çalışma, Batı Avrasya Bozkırları, Kuzey Karadeniz ve Balkanların IX-XI. yüzyıl arası döneminin tarihini tam olarak anlatamaz. Ancak önemlerinin aksine doğrudan Peçenekler üzerine yapılmış monografik çalışmaların sayısının oldukça az olduğunu belirtmek gerekir. Bu durumun temel sebeplerinden birisi Peçeneklerin geniş coğrafyaya yayılmış ve birçok farklı toplulukla temasta bulunmuş olmaları ve bunun bir sonucu olarak da onlarla ilgili bilgilerin çok farklı dillerde yazılmış ana kaynaklara yayılmış olmasıdır.
