Notwithstanding the acquired position of the Hittites on the central plateau of anatolia and the expansion of their power, there always remained one part of the peninsula which they were nuable permanently to absorb or pacify. This was the Kingdom of Arzawa. From earliest times it figures in the Hittite records as a rival power; in the dark age for Hatti it advanced its frontier into the Hittite lowlands as far as Tyana; and as late as 13000 B. e., when the greater Hittite Empire was in the making, Arzawa maintained separate diplomatic relations with the Pharaohs of Egypt
