Identification of Traffic Accident Hotspots Through Geographic Information Systems-Based Spatial Analysis: The Case of Bitlis, Türkiye

Öz

Traffic accidents persist as a critical transportation and public health challenge in Türkiye, echoing a global trend. In this framework, spatial analysis of accident data is of paramount importance for the precise identification of high-risk zones, the development of robust safety strategies, and the formulation of evidence-based policies aimed at mitigating accident rates. While numerous studies in the Turkish literature examine the spatiotemporal distribution of traffic accidents across various provinces, a comprehensive Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based analysis specifically focusing on Bitlis has not yet been conducted. This gap underscores the necessity of scientifically investigating the region's accident patterns and generating data-driven insights to assist decision-makers. This study seeks to fill this significant academic void by analyzing the spatial distribution of traffic accidents in Bitlis through GIS-supported analytical methodologies. Utilizing a five-year accident point dataset (2020–2024), the research delineates density zones, conducts statistical hotspot analysis, and identifies high-risk road segments. The findings demonstrate that accident clusters are predominantly concentrated along corridors with heavy traffic volumes and road sections with challenging physical or structural constraints. Additionally, harsh climatic factors, road geometry, and driver behaviors emerge as primary determinants of accident occurrences. Consequently, this research represents the first comprehensive GIS-based accident analysis for Bitlis. The results provide a substantial reference for enhancing regional traffic safety, eliminating chronic blackspot, and planning strategic infrastructure investments while establishing a fundamental framework for future research.
