On the Distinction of Intransitive Verbs in Turkish

Öz

This study focuses on the intransitive verbs and their distinctions in Turkish. Traditional grammar rules consider intransitive verbs simply as objectless verbs without mentioning their subject’s semantic features. Modern studies deal with intransitive verbs in terms of their syntactic and semantic properties and classify them as unaccusative and unergative verbs. According to this difference, unaccusative verb is an intransitive verb whose argument has patient role semantically (Buzlar eridi ‘The ice melted’); unergative verb is an intransitive verb whose argument has agent role semantically (Çocuk koştu ‘The child ran’). Many linguists have proposed various morphological, syntactic, and semantic findings of unaccusative and unergative divisions in various languages. Findings about the existence of this distinction were also sought for Turkish. Impersonal passives, the selection of the et- ‘to do’ / ol- ‘to become’, aspectual properties etc. were exemplified as evidence. Apart from this unaccusative-unergative distinction, some researchers assessed intransitive verbs into four groups. In this article, firstly the distinction between unaccusative and unergative verbs will be described. Then the properties of four intransitive verb groups in Turkish will be examined.

TÜRKÇEDE GEÇİŞSİZ FİİLLERİN AYRIMI ÜZERİNE

Öz

Bu çalışma Türkçedeki geçişsiz fiiller ve bunların ayrımı üzerine yoğunlaşmaktadır. Geleneksel gramer kuralları geçişsiz fiilleri unsurlarının anlamsal özelliklerine değinmeden basitçe nesnesi olmayan fiiller olarak değerlendirir. Modern çalışmalar ise geçişsiz fiilleri taşıdıkları unsurların sözdizimsel ve anlamsal özellikleri açısından ele alır ve onları anakkuzatif-anergatif (unaccusative unergative) şeklinde sınıflandırmaya çalışır. Bu ayrıma göre anergatif fiiller, kılıcı (agent) rolünde bir unsura (Çocuk koştu); anakkuzatif fiiller ise etkilenen (patient) rolünde bir unsura sahiptir (Buz eridi). Birçok araştırmacı çeşitli diller üzerinde bu ayrıma dair çeşitli biçimbilimsel, sözdizimsel ve anlambilimsel bulgular ileri sürmüşlerdir. Türkçe için de bu ayrımın varlığına dair bulgular aranmıştır. Bu ayrıma kişisiz edilgen yapılar, et- / ol- yardımcı fiillerinin seçimi, fiilin görünüşsel özelliği vb. kanıt olarak gösterilmiştir. Bu ikili ayrımın dışında bazı araştırmalar özne konumundaki unsurun kılıcı olup olmamasına ve fiil anlamının bitmişlik veya bitmemişlik özelliğine göre geçişsiz fiilleri dört grupta değerlendirmektedir. Bu yazıda ilk önce anakkuzatif-anergatif ayrımı üzerine durulacak daha sonra dörtlü ayrıma göre Türkçe geçişsiz fiillerin durumu değerlendirilecektir.
