INDIAN DIASPORA IN THE GULF COUNTRIES AS AN EXAMPLE OF SOFT POWER

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 16 Sayı: 1, 87 - 117, 30.04.2025

The Indian diaspora holds a prominent position among the world’s largest diaspora communities and functions as a key instrument of soft power in both domestic and foreign policy. The Gulf region is home to nine million Indians, who play a crucial role in its economy, society, and culture. This diaspora fulfills key labor needs in the Gulf region, particularly in energy, construction and services, thereby strengthening India–Gulf relations. However, challenges such as democratic deficits, the Kafala system, unskilled labor, poor working conditions, and social discrimination continue to limit the diaspora’s influence and its ability to fully integrate into Gulf societies.
