Aim: The aim of this study is to examine hearing loss in newborn babies of women with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and to reveal whether thyroid disorder damages the auditory system.
Method: In this retrospective study, the files of a total of 52964 women who gave birth in the Maternity Hospital between September 2019 and December 2022 were examined. The study included newborn babies of 412 hyperthyroid and 3584 hypothyroid women (n=3996) and newborn babies of 900 women without any problems for the control group (n=900). Hearing screenings of all newborn babies were performed with the Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (A-ABR) test. Hearing screenings were performed three times onthenewborn babies participating in the study. The hyperthyroid group was compared with the control group, the hypothyroid group with the control group, and the hyperthyroid group with the hypothyroid group.
Results: In the first scan, there was a significant difference between the groups (p=0,004). In particular, there were statistically significant differences between the hyperthyroid group and the control group, hyperthyroid and hypothyroid groups (p<0,05). In the second and third scans, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05).
Conclusion: According to the findings obtained, it is thought that the hearing systems of newborn babies of women with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are temporarily affected. Therefore, they should be followed up at short intervals.
