An Investigation of High School Students' Attitudes Toward Sports and Internet Addiction Levels

Öz

This study focuses on examining the relationship between high school students' attitudes toward sports and their internet addiction levels. A total of 598 high school students (328 females, 270 males) selected via convenience sampling method voluntarily participated in the study, which was designed in the correlational research model. In data collection, a Personal Information Form, the "Attitude Toward Sports Scale" and the "Young Internet Addiction Test-Short Form" were used. Within the scope of statistical evaluations, in addition to normality tests, Cronbach’s Alpha, independent samples t-test, One-Way ANOVA, MANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis were utilized. The analysis results revealed that both internet addiction and attitude toward sports scores showed a significant difference according to the gender variable. While no significant difference was detected in students' internet addiction levels according to academic achievement level, significant differences were recorded in their attitudes toward sports. This differentiation was observed to be in favor of high academic achievement in the psychosocial and mental development subdimensions. Furthermore, statistically significant differentiations were recorded in the scale scores depending on active sports participation status and daily internet usage duration variables. The correlation analysis results demonstrated a negative and low-level significant relationship between students' internet addiction levels and their attitudes toward sports. These findings indicate that active participation in sports is associated with lower levels of internet addiction and points to a potential protective role that should be tested in longitudinal or experimental research.
