The US and Turkish Governments created an amicable relationship after the Second World War. The pcriod from 1947 to the early 1960s was one of almost full convergence of American and Turkish policies. Turkey had found the strong outside support it needed to resists the Soviet demands över the long haul; and American policymakers, eager to line up reluctant nations in Europe or Asia for defensive pacts such as NATO and SEATO, found the Turks an enthusiastic ally. At the and of the period, at the beginning of 1960's, it vvould have been hard to imagine that in the near future the Turks vvould join in the chorus of anti-American agitation by shouting the familiar "Yankee Go Home". Although little is reported or knovvn in the United States about the details and extent of this development, since 1959, deep antiAmerican sentiments have emerged in Turkey, vvith a concomitant foreign policy reorientation tovvard neutralism.
