The Concept of Utopia and Visual Arts: An Intersection Arena from the Classical to the Postmodern Eras

The term "utopia" was coined by Thomas More in the 16th century by adding the common “u” from the Greek prefixes 'eu' (good) and 'ou' (no) to the root 'tópos', which means place. This creates a word that simultaneously conveys the meanings of 'good place' and 'no place.' However, as a concept, utopia has existed long before it was named, representing humanity's imagination and pursuit of the ideal or a better way of being in theological, philosophical, literary, social, and political domains since the development of social systems and the our ability to reflect on them. This research examines the relationship between the concept of utopia and visual arts practices, where the imagination of the better and ideal is embodied and applied. This study explores the ever-changing contexts and boundaries of utopia and art across pre-modern, modern, and post-modern periods, focusing on the various purposes and strategies that shaped their union in different periods of political, cultural, and art history. The intellectual and functional evolution of these two concepts, their influence on each other, and the outcomes of their intersection are analyzed. The research is limited to Western culture, politics, philosophy, and visual arts. Given the historical breadth of the study, detailed descriptions of the referenced works are avoided, and the text is designed to highlight the relationship between the perception of utopia and art practices across different periods.

Ütopya Kavramı ve Görsel Sanatlar: Klasik Dönemden Postmodern Döneme Bir Kesişim Alanı

Ütopya, ilk olarak 16. yüzyılda Thomas More tarafından kullanılmış, aynı anda hem iyi-yer hem de hiç-yer anlamını karşılayan bir kelimedir. Bununla birlikte, bir terim olarak adlandırılmasından çok daha önce, insanlığın sosyal sistemler kurma ve bu sistemler üzerine düşünme yetisi kazandığı andan itibaren, teolojik, felsefi, edebi, sosyal ve politik alanlarda daha iyi olanın ve ideal olanın tahayyülüyle ortak bilincimizin bir parçası haline gelmiştir. Bu anlamda, ütopya insanlığa özgü, içkin bir kavram olarak varlığını sürdürmüştür. Bu bağlamda kurgulanan ütopyaların görsel sanatlarla olan ilişkisi de bu kavramın kendisi kadar köklüdür. Ütopya ve sanat ilişkisi, başlangıçta, kurgulanan imkânsız mekân ve durumların görsel tasvirlerinin üretimi olarak sınırlı kalmıştır. Ancak zaman içinde değişen sanat pratikleri ve ütopya algısı, sanata bu ilişkideki yeri ve işlevini genişletme fırsatı sunmuştur. Bu sürecin sonunda ise sanat, ütopya kavramının kurgulandığı, somutlaştığı ve uygulamaya koyulmaya çalışıldığı bir alan olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bu araştırmada, ütopya kavramının dayandığı daha iyi ve ideal olanın hayal edilmesi eyleminin, görsel sanatlar pratikleri ile olan birlikteliği ve ütopya kavramının yapısal ve işlevsel değişimi sürecinde sanat ile kurduğu ilişkinin genişleyen kapsamı incelenmektedir. Araştırmanın amacı da modern öncesi, modern ve modern sonrası dönemlerde bağlamları ve sınırları daimî olarak değişen ütopya ve sanat kavramlarının etkileşimleri, siyasi ve kültürel tarihin yanısıra sanat tarihinin farklı dönemlerinde ortaya çıkan farklı amaç ve stratejileri karşılaştırılarak birbirleri üzerindeki etkileri ve birlikteliklerinin sonuçları ortaya çıkarmaktır.
