An Analysis of The Effect of Personality Traits on Sport Choice Among Athletes

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether personality traits influence the choice of sports discipline before athletes reach the performance stage. Thus, it aims to reveal the extent to which personality traits play a role and are decisive in discipline selection during the early stages. The research was conducted with a total of 349 students, including 214 males and 135 females, from the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Kütahya Dumlupınar University. Data was collected using a questionnaire consisting of 18 questions. When personality traits were examined according to discipline among the test results, a statistically significant difference was found between the groups in the trait of agreeableness (P=0.041<0.05). A statistically significant difference was found in the trait of extraversion between those who chose their own sports discipline and those who were guided by others (P=0.01<0.05). When personality traits were examined between national athletes and non-national athletes in this study, a statistically significant difference was found in neuroticisim (P=0.04<0.05). In light of the results obtained, it is thought that athletes' personality traits may be effective in discipline selection and in achieving success. When examining personality traits across different sports disciplines based on test results, the trait of Agreeableness was found to have a statistically significant difference among groups (P=0.041<0.05). Moreover, a statistically significant difference was observed in the Extraversion trait between individuals who independently chose their sports discipline and those who were directed by others (P=0.01<0.05). Additionally, when analyzing the personality traits of national and non-national athletes, a statistically significant difference was found in the Neuroticisim trait (P=0.04<0.05). In light of these findings, it is suggested that athletes' personality traits may play a significant role in their selection of a sports discipline and their pathway to success.

SPORCULARDA KİŞİLİK ÖZELLİKLERİNİN BRANŞ SEÇİMİNE ETKİSİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Araştırma Kütahya Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Spor Bilimleri Fakültesi’nden 214 erkek 135 kadın olmak üzere toplam 349 öğrencinin katılımıyla yapılmış ancak 9 adet anket hatalı olmasından dolayı verilerin dışında bırakılmıştır. Toplamda 18 adet sorudan oluşan anket ile veriler toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde SPSS 26 paket programı kullanılmıştır. Verilerin normal dağılıma sahip olup olmadığı Kolmogorow Smirnov testine göre belirlenmiş ve p değerinin 0.05’ten küçük olduğu görülmüştür. Dolayısıyla verilerin analizde parametrik olmayan testler uygulanmıştır. İkili değişkenler arasındaki farkı belirlemek için Mann Whitney U testi, ikiden fazla değişkenlerde ise Kruskal Wallis H testi uygulanmıştır. Anlamlılık düzeyi p<0,005 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Test sonuçları arasında branşlara göre kişilik özellikleri incelendiğinde Uyumluluk özelliği gruplar arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulunmuştur. (P=0,041<0,05). Spor branşı tercihini kendi yapanlar ve başkaları tarafından yönlendirilenler arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı fark dışa dönüklük özelliğinde bulunmuştur(P=0,01<0,05). Yapılan çalışmada milli sporcular ve milli olmayan sporcular arasında kişilik özellikleri incelendiğinde duygusal denge özelliğinde istatiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık bulunmuştur(P=0,04<0,05). Elde edilen sonuçlar ışığında sporcuların kişilik özelliklerinin branş seçiminde ve başarıya ulaşma aşamalarında etkili olabileceği düşünülmektedir.
