The Chechen Crisis from an International Perspective: Sovereignty, Separatism and Securitization
Öz
The end of the Cold War and the collapse of the bipolar international system have brought suppressed identity demands and political independence aspirations to the fore, particularly in Eurasia. The Chechen crisis that emerged during this process quickly transcended Russia's internal security concerns, becoming a multidimensional international crisis that affected regional and global power balances. The expansionist policies of Tsarist Russia towards the Caucasus since the 18th century and the Soviet Union's period of oppression and deportation left deep scars on the Chechen collective memory. Taking advantage of the power vacuum created by the collapse of the Soviet Union, the declaration of Chechen independence created a perception of an existential threat to the Russian Federation in terms of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and state prestige. In this context, a comparison of the First and Second Chechen Wars clearly reveals the transformation of the crisis over time. The first war emphasized nationalist resistance, while the second focused on counterterrorism and security. Furthermore, the Chechen crisis became an important example in redefining sovereignty, intervention, and security in the post-Cold War international system.
