The Use of Origami and Stories in Pain Management of Children

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 3, 1032 - 1040

Öz

At different stages of life, children often have to experience invasive procedures that cause pain, anxiety, stress and fear during diagnosis and treatment. Untreated pain leaves both physical and psychological effects on children. Pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods are used by health professionals to reduce pain according to the age and developmental level of children. Nonpharmacological methods are used to reduce or control pain without the use of drugs, to reduce anxiety, stress and fear, and to maintain the well-being of children undergoing the procedure. The use of origami and stories are among the nonpharmacological methods, which are one of the methods of pain management and pain relief in the treatment process of children. Origami, which is the art of folding paper, is an educational and fun activity that can create figures such as animals, plants, flowers or transport vehicles from paper, while storytelling, in which an emotional bond is established between the listener and the reader, is an effective method used to reduce the pain that develops due to various invasive procedures. As a result of this study, it is recommended that the use of origami and story in the care of pediatric patients should be included in nursing practices as nonpharmacological nursing interventions by pediatric nurses in clinical settings and its use should be expanded because it is easy to apply, simple and reliable methods.
