REPRESENTATION OF OTTOMAN ART IN BRITISH MUSEUM COLLECTION: THE ONLINE EXPERIENCE

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 8 Sayı: 2, 86 - 95, 30.12.2025

Öz

The representation of Ottoman art within the British Museum's online collection offers a lens to explore cultural heritage, digital curation, and the global dissemination of artistic traditions. This study examines how the British Museum curates and displays its Ottoman art collection in its digital archive, focusing on the usability and effectiveness of the website’s search and filter functionalities. Using the System Usability Scale (SUS), the research evaluates the platform’s navigational structure, search capabilities, and the integration of filtering options to understand how effectively the digital medium conveys the richness and complexity of Ottoman art. Given the growing role of digital platforms in museum access and engagement, this research aims to assess how well the British Museum’s website serves users exploring Ottoman art. The findings suggest that while the website’s tools, such as the search and filter functions, are generally effective, there are opportunities for refinement. The study emphasizes the importance of these tools in ensuring that users can engage with the collection efficiently and meaningfully. Moreover, it underscores the broader implications for digital platforms in representing non-Western art, such as Ottoman art, in ways that foster a deeper understanding of cultural heritage. By identifying areas for improvement, this research provides valuable insights into how museums can enhance their online presence and contribute to the accessibility and appreciation of global artistic traditions.
