Gendered Dimension of Rural-to-Urban Migration on Women in Türkiye: A Historical Review

Öz

Rural-to-urban migration has been one of the most significant socio-economic transformations in Türkiye. Women have been actors directly affected by this transformation. This study examines women’s migration experiences through qualitative historical analysis based on secondary data sources, including statistics from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), policy documents, and existing literature. Rather than treating gender as a singular analytical category, the study adopts an intersectionality framework to examine multi-layered processes across different historical periods. Accordingly, the analysis is structured through a historical periodization covering key phases: the mass rural-to-urban migration following the 1950s, the neoliberal restructuring of the 1980s and 1990s, and the post-2000 period. Women’s experiences of migration are not uniform but are differentiated through intersecting structural positions. Gecekondu (squatter) settlements emerge as critical sites where traditional gender norms are both reproduced and reshaped under urban conditions, reflecting the intersection of spatial marginality and patriarchal relations. Since the 1980s, neoliberal economic policies have intensified women’s concentration in informal, low-paid, and precarious forms of employment, affecting those positioned at the intersections of class and ethnic disadvantages. In the post-2000 period, despite increasing access to education and greater urban visibility, structural inequalities persist, limiting women’s equal and secure participation in urban life and labor markets.
