Traces of the Scythians in Southwest Asia and Eurasia

Abstract

In the 8 century B.C., a new threat emerged in the northern Blacksea area, Persia and Asia Minor (Anadolu). The Skhyts, who were mentioned in Asur and Urartian written sources as “horseman tribes” were a real security problem in the borders of this states. Ancient Greek historians and georaphers like Herodotus, Thukydides, Xenophon and Strabo, do not tell all the history about Skhyts but they mention for different reasons, about the role played by the Skhyts in and around Asia Minor. The Skhyt war weaponry were found in Çavuştepe and different parts of Anatolia, Southwest Asia and even Egypt strongly supports the affects of the Skhyts in this area. The aim of this study is to investigate the international relationships of the “horseman tribes” Skhyts, with Urartu and Meds first, and as a result their affects in the region. This research reveals that the Skhyts perceived their existance in the vast area with differing climate and nature from Ukrain to China, from Siberia to Arabia with their active life from the beginning to the middle of the first millennium B.C.

GÜNEYBATI ASYA VE AVRASYA’DA İSKİT ASKERİ İZLERİ

Öz

MÖ 8. yüzyılda, Karadeniz’in kuzeyi, İran ve Anadolu’da etkisini gösterecek olan yeni bir tehlike ortaya çıkmıştı. Asur ve Urartu devletleri için gerçek bir güvenlik sorunu oluşturan İskitler, Asur ve Urartu yazılı kaynaklarında “atlı kavimler” olarak geçmektedirler. Herodotos, Strabon, Thukydides, Xenophon gibi erken dönem Hellen tarihçileri ve coğrafyacıları da, çeşitli vesilelerle, İskitler’in bölgede oynadıkları rol hakkında bilgi vermektedir. Çavuştepe’de ve Anadolu’nun çeşitli yerlerinde yapılan arkeolojik kazılarda İskit savaş araç gereçlerine de rastlanmıştır. Bu makalenin amacı, bu çevrede MÖ I. binyıl başından ortalarına kadar, bölge devletleri içerisinde “atlı kavimler” olarak belirtilen İskitler’in Asur, Urartu ve Medler ile olan ilişkilerini değerlendirmek ve bu ilişkiler sonunda Anadolu’da bıraktıkları etki üzerinde durmaktır. Ayrıca, İskitlerin MÖ I. binyıl başlarında Kırım’dan Çin’e, Sibirya’dan Arabistan’a kadar uzanan geniş sahadaki faaliyetleri, bu tarihlerde farklı iklim ve tabiata sahip olan geniş bölgede oldukça hareketli bir kavim olduklarını ortaya koymaktadır.
