Öz

Expert historians and archaeologists who wrote the book approached the cities that shaped the ancient world and stood out from a very basic, general point of view. Forty cities that are geographically located on five continents and come to prominent in history constitute the subject of the book. In this book, the author tries to answer questions such as when people first came together to live together to create urban life and what life was like in these first cities. Instead of talking about the history of a city in a classical way, the authors, on the one hand, try to explain the architecture and art created in the cities, on the other hand, they also present information about the city, politics, culture and the human's life to the readers.

Kitabı kaleme alan uzman tarihçiler ve arkeologlar antik dünyayı şekillendiren ve ön plana çıkan kentlere çok temel, genel bir bakış açısı ile yaklaşmışlardır. Coğrafi olarak beş kıta üzerinde yer alan ve tarihte ön plana çıkan kırk kent kitabın konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu kitap insanların ilk ne zaman birlikte yaşamak için bir araya gelerek kent yaşamını oluşturdukları, bu ilk kentlerde yaşamın nasıl olduğu gibi sorulara cevap vermeye çalışmaktadır. Yazarlar bir kentin klasik bir şekilde tarihçesinden bahsetmek yerine bir yandan kentlerde yaratılmış olan mimariyi ve sanatı anlatmaya çalışırken, diğer yandan kent, siyaset, kültür ve insan yaşamına dair bilgileri de okurlara sunmaktadır.
