Archive documents are important sources that shed light on the period of a state or a community lived. These documents, which we call the primary source in terms of historical science, have taken part in the literature with different names due to their reasons for writing and the information they have. Important sources that guide us about the bureaucracy, military, political, social and economic structure of the Ottoman state is Tevârih-i Âlies, Tahrir Books, Muhimme Register, Vakıf Books, Şer’iyye Sicils. Apart from these main sources, there are many archive documents with different contents (surname, ruznamçe etc.). However, our priority is to emphasize the importance of the Şer’iyye Sicils, proving juridical, administrative, social and economic relations between the Ottoman state and the its society. No doubt only the Şer’iyye Sicils are not sufficient to reveal precise information about the Ottoman state structure. However, in these documents, we see the problems an individual has with the state, the ruler or the ruler of a community, or with each other, the judgments or penalties given injustice. This study we have prepared aims to draw attention to the importance of the registries by giving examples of the documents we use in our thesis as well as the information about the Şer’iyye Sicils.
