Moda Endüstrisinde Sıfır Atık Yaklaşımı ve Kırkyama Tekniğinin Döngüsel Tasarıma Katkısı
Öz
Kırkyama, atıl durumda olan ya da daha önce kullanılmış kumaş parçalarını yeniden değerlendirme amacıyla geliştirilen, modanın çevresel etkilerine karşı çözüm sunabilecek önemli bir tekstil tekniğidir. Giysi tasarımında önem kazanan sıfır atık yaklaşımı ise, kaynak israfını önlemeyi ve tüm paydaşlarda sorumlu tüketim bilincinin oluşturulmasını ve yaygınlaştırılmasını hedeflemektedir. Moda endüstrisinin çevre üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri düşünüldüğünde, kırkyama yöntemi atık kumaşların tekrar kullanılması yoluyla hem yaratıcı tasarımlar üretmeyi hem de ürünlerin çevresel etkilerini azaltmayı mümkün kılar. Bu çalışma, kırkyama tekniğini sıfır atık kavramı çerçevesinde ele alarak, giyim modasına mevcut yaklaşımlara alternatif bir düşünce biçimi kazandırmayı hedeflemektedir. Kırkyamanın tarihsel gelişimi geçmişten günümüze örneklerle incelenerek, bu tekniğin moda alanında nasıl yenilikçi ve çözüm odaklı uygulamalara dönüştüğü ortaya konulmaktadır. Araştırma sürecinden elde edilen veriler temel alınarak gerçekleştirilen uygulama çalışmasıyla da bu dönüşümün pratikteki etkileri gözlemlenmiştir.

Zero-Waste Approach and the Contribution of Patchwork to Circular Design in the Fashion Industry

This study aims to examine comprehensively the historical foundations and contemporary reflections of sustainable production approaches in the field of fashion through patchwork, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Accepted as a significant representative of traditional crafts, patchwork is not only an aesthetic method of production but also emerges as an ecological practice based on the reuse of textile waste materials. In various periods and cultures, patchwork has been produced by combining textile fragments that had lost their functionality or diminished in value, making it a practice through which the historical roots of sustainability can be traced. In this context, the study investigates the contribution of patchwork to both the preservation of cultural heritage and the environmental, economic, and social sustainability goals of today, addressing the subject from theoretical, historical, and practical dimensions.
The research is situated within the thematic areas highlighted in the sustainable fashion literature, such as waste management, resource efficiency, recycling, circular economy, and the reinterpretation of traditional techniques. From this perspective, the historical development of patchwork, technical details of its production stages, the diversity of materials used, and aesthetic approaches to design are systematically examined. In addition, the study evaluates the functionality, aesthetic value, role in cultural identity construction, and contributions to economic sustainability of patchwork practices in today’s fashion industry through sectoral examples and field studies.
The findings reveal that patchwork techniques do not merely generate aesthetic value, but also perform a crucial role in sustainable fashion production by reducing textile waste, promoting recycling, and supporting local production practices. Integrating traditional patchwork methods with contemporary design approaches creates the foundation for innovative fashion products that harmonize functionality and artistic quality. This process not only delivers environmental benefits but also supports the preservation of cultural continuity, redefines the value of artisanal labor, and encourages consumers to make more conscious choices.
The findings demonstrate that patchwork techniques extend beyond merely generating aesthetic value, serving a vital function in sustainable fashion production by reducing textile waste, encouraging recycling, and supporting local production practices. Combining traditional patchwork practices with contemporary design approaches fosters the creation of innovative fashion products that integrate both functionality and artistic expression. This process not only delivers environmental benefits but also contributes to preserving cultural continuity, redefining the value of artisanal labor, and promoting greater consumer awareness and conscious decision-making.
In conclusion, sustainable production models developed through patchwork provide multidimensional benefits in terms of reducing environmental impacts, preserving cultural heritage, ensuring economic sustainability, and reinforcing social participation. This study emphasizes the importance of adopting patchwork not only as a traditional production technique but also as a strategic production approach within sustainable fashion. The reinterpretation of traditional techniques in line with sustainability principles plays a critical role in shaping the future of fashion. Therefore, supporting patchwork and similar traditional methods through academic research, artistic production, and sectoral practices will contribute significantly to the development of sustainable fashion practices and to the deepening of knowledge in this field.
