INFORMATION FROM JAPANESE HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS REGARDING ARMENIANS AND JEWS WHO MIGRATED TO EAST TURKESTAN FROM TURKEY

Öz

There is no detailed historical study examining the migration of Armenians and Jews from Turkey to East Turkestan, which is under Chinese occupation, in the last century. This study aims to examine the new lives and identity formation processes of Armenians and Jews who migrated from Turkey to East Turkestan in the early 20th century. On the other hand, some information on this subject can be found in the historical works of famous European travelers and researchers who visited East Turkestan. In addition, information about Armenians and Jews who migrated from Turkey to East Turkestan can be found in the research conducted by some Japanese researchers in East Turkestan. In this study, which uses a qualitative research method, historical documents compiled by European scholars and travelers (Ambolt, Schomberg, Waugh) and the Japanese researcher Tokutarou were examined. Information about Hüdaverdi Ermeni and Karekin Moldovak, individuals who migrated from Turkey to East Turkestan, has been compiled from the works of European and Japanese researchers and travelers, as well as from information I obtained through relatives of Hüdaverdi Ermeni's wife living in Istanbul; these findings have been supported by personal interviews. The findings, evaluated in the context of the Armenian and Jewish diasporas in China and the political power vacuum, uprisings, and military occupations in East Turkestan, have revealed that the minorities who migrated to the region followed survival strategies. It was found that Yusuf, originally Jewish, converted to Islam and took the name Hüdaverdi Ermeni, became one of the wealthiest merchants, and later settled in Mecca via Kashmir due to political pressures. Furthermore, it was determined that Karekin Moldovak, an Armenian carpet merchant, outwardly converted to Islam and took the name Gilemahun to avoid harm from the Tungan army, but remained inwardly devoted to Christianity. The research findings indicate that political instability in East Turkestan and the desire for social integration among migrant minorities have created a need for the development of situational identity strategies. Ultimately, this study makes it possible to look at demographic data in Chinese and Russian state archives from a new perspective. Furthermore, it reveals that the situational identity strategies observed in East Turkestan are like the survival reflexes of minorities experiencing political crises and authority confusion in other regions
