After tooth extraction, the
alveolar bone undergoes explicit changes,
including the height of the bone as well as its
width. Although resorption of the alveolar
bone after tooth loss in the maxilla or mandible
is generally three-dimensional, it has been
shown that the rates of horizontal bone loss
and vertical bone loss are different. Recently,
cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has
become a widely accepted diagnostic tool for
the evaluation of alveolar bone resoptions. In
this study, it was aimed to evaluate the
residual crest width in cone-beam computed
tomography images in upper and lower
edentulous patients. In the study, 50 patients
who had edentulous upper and lower jaws
and at least three years past after tooth
extraction were included in the study. In the
study, the measurement in the region where
the crest is the narrowest and the widest in the
mandible was found to be greater than the
measurement in the region where the crest is
the narrowest and the widest in the maxilla
(p<0.05). Knowing the areas where the crest
width is the narrowest and the widest in total
edentulous jaws will increase the success in
dental implant planning and treatment.
